Liverpool batter Atalanta

Liverpool arrived in Italy with fans braced for a high scoring affair.

The Reds are lethal going forward and their Serie A opponents are famed for their goal getting ability.

Add a youthful Liverpool back line into the mix and you have a game that guarantees goals – we just didn’t expect to score all of them.

There was a hattrick from Diogo Jota, a dink from Sadio Mane and a strike from Mo Salah on the way to an impressive 5-0 win.

However, there was also plenty of good work done at the back by one of the Reds’ youngest center back partnerships of recent times.

Klopp on Rhys Williams

Jürgen Klopp has heaped praise on Rhys Williams for his composed, mature performance which helped the visitors to a clean sheet.

The 19-year-old has stepped up in the absence of Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Joel Matip and he has been thoroughly impressive. Neil Jones of Goal has quoted the boss as saying:

“Exceptional. I cannot imagine being 19 and playing in the CL against Zapata, it’s incredible!

“I couldn’t be more happy for Rhys. You should see him in the dressing room, you’d need something special to get the smile off his face!”

What RTK has to say

Jürgen Klopp is right to heap praise on Rhys Williams.

The teenager had a phenomenal game at the back given the occasion and the opposition.

The starlet can be proud of himself having collected a clean sheet against a side that scored a record amount of goals in Serie A last season.

Fingers crossed the youngster will continue his progress and will establish himself as a first team regular in the years to come.
