For the first time in 30 years, Liverpool started the season as champions. The Reds romped to the Premier League title last season, in the end the table looked much closer than it was in reality. Had the season not been interrupted then 100 points would’ve been a doddle for Jürgen Klopp. Some questions have been asked of the Reds this season, however, Liverpool are still top of the league despite the gigantic hurdles they’ve faced. They are well on course to retain the title.

Problems faced

Liverpool have had awful luck this season. The Reds have had to deal with a litany of problems in the form of illnesses, injuries and refereeing errors.

Liverpool have lost Thiago, Naby Keita, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Alisson, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to injury at one point or another.

The Reds have also seen Thiago, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita ruled out after testing positive for COVID-19.

Furthermore Jürgen Klopp’s side has had to contend with a string of controversial VAR decisions. Jordan Pickford wasn’t sent off in the Derby, Jordan Henderson’s stoppage time winner was ruled out in the same game and Fabinho had a penalty given against him despite winning the ball outside of the box.

Liverpool top of the league

Despite absolutely everything, despite the officiating howlers and the 7-2 thumping at Villa Park – Liverpool are still top of the league heading into November.

The Reds hold a three point lead at the top of the table heading into an absolutely crucial match week.

Jürgen Klopp’s men travel to Manchester City knowing that a win could put them six points ahead of their closest rivals.

Facing all of the challenges they have faced and still just about doing enough to claim top spot in the league shows that the Reds are still playing like champions – Liverpool are well placed to retain their title.
