Liverpool injury crisis

Where do we even start?

Let’s start with the most notable absentee: Virgil van Dijk. The towering Dutchman will miss the remainder of the season after rupturing his ACL in the Merseyside Derby when Jordan Pickford flew into a tackle at knee height.

There have also been lay offs for Alisson Becker, Joel Matip, Naby Keita, Joe Gomez, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and the list goes on.

At the minute Jürgen Klopp has just one centre back fit in the senior side: Joe Gomez. The boss’ backup partner, Fabinho, pulled up with a hamstring injury in the Champions League tie with FC Midtjylland.

Fabinho injury update

Half an hour into the Reds’ first European home game of the season, Fabinho pulled up lame with a hamstring problem.

The Brazilian was substituted off with Rhys Williams taking his place in the defence.

The Mirror has reported that the club feared it was a serious injury for the Brazilian; a grade three tear would see the midfielder miss up to six months of football.

However, their Fabinho injury update claims that a scan has revealed it is only a grade one or two problem, meaning that the midfielder should be back in action after the international break.

What RTK has to say

This Fabinho injury update makes encouraging reading.

The Reds can’t afford to be without the Brazilian for too long given the dearth of options in the back four.

However, this does mean that Jürgen Klopp will be without Fabinho for the trip to Manchester City on the eve of the international break.

Fingers crossed Joel Matip will be available for the Etihad tie, it could be too much to ask Rhys Williams to hold his own against a Pep Guardiola front line.
