Poor Dayot Upamecano performance won't worry Liverpool one bit

Dayot Upamecano put in a poor performance against Manchester United. That won’t worry Liverpool, however, who reportedly want the defender.

Dayot Upamecano was poor against Manchester United – hardly a shock, given the 5-0 scoreline. The Frenchman made zero interceptions, zero clearances, only won 50% of his aerial duels, and was the only RB Leipzig defender United dispossessed.

There were positives, certainly. He won all five of his tackles and he completed the most passes in the game, to name two. But on the whole, Upamecano was powerless to stop United tearing his team apart.

Now, that could bring about alarm bells on Merseyside. Liverpool reportedly want the defender, after all, and they’re in need of one right now.

Virgil van Dijk’s injury leaves them very short, especially as Joel Matip can’t stay fit. SportBild says Liverpool were looking at Upamecano for a £40m move at the end of the season. They may have to accelerate those plans, though.

But really, this display won’t worry Liverpool. They’ll expect it.

Van Dijk and Matip are both 29, meaning the Reds need to think long-term replacements. Joe Gomez is certainly one, given his age, and Upamecano, at 21, fits the bill, too.

But the key there is long-term. Liverpool aren’t in desperate need of a ready-made replacement but rather someone they can work with and develop themselves.

That, after all, is how they prefer to do things. Liverpool’s success has come from developing players rather than signing stars – Thiago being the one exception, but he arrived post-success.

Upamecano fits the bill. He’s got all the raw talents to be a world-class defender and just needs coaching in a certain direction. Liverpool will want to be the team who chooses that direction.

With that in mind, a poor performance here and there won’t worry them at all.
