Memphis Depay sent a message of support to international teammate Virgil van Dijk after scoring for Lyon on Sunday evening.
Memphis Depay sent Lyon on their way to an emphatic first-half against AS Monaco on Sunday. The Dutchman grabbed the opener after a cutback from Houssem Aouar – the first of four goals before half-time for Lyon.
And Depay used his goal to publicly show his support for Dutch International teammate Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk, of course, will undergo knee surgery soon after damaging his ACL against Everton. It’s now unlikely that he’ll return before the end of the season. There’s no real guarantee that he’ll return as the same player, in truth.
Depay went the traditional route of showing support – a T-Shirt message. ‘Virgil. Stay strong my brother,’ he displayed to the camera after his goal on 11 minutes.

What RTK has to say
Hard not to love Depay for this as it’s not something he had to do. But it also goes some way to highlight the severity of Van Dijk’s injury.
There has been an outpouring of support for the player who as we say, may not return as the same dominant fixture in Liverpool’s first-team.
It’ll be a fight to get back to where he was. First comes the surgery and the agonising wait before he can properly start his rehabilitation. Then Van Dijk has both mental and physical hurdles to overcome before he’s back to his best.
Messages like Depay’s will only help him remember he’s got millions around the world routing for him.
