Liverpool have got to buy in January. The Reds may have had a successful summer window but it was lacking in one key area: they didn’t replace Dejan Lovren. It was a massive gamble on the back line’s fitness but it was a gamble which didn’t pay off. Liverpool have reportedly shortlisted Jose Gimenez of Atletico Madrid as a potential signing in Virgil van Dijk’s absence.
Virgil van Dijk injury
It never gets easier typing up what happened to R Virg.
In the Merseyside Derby we witnessed one of the clumsiest, most reckless tackles the Derby has seen in many moons.
Jordan Pickford came flying out at Virgil van Dijk, the England keeper not having a clue what he was doing.
The subsequent lunge tore Virgil’s ACL and the Dutchman has subsequently been ruled out for the season.

Liverpool shortlist Gimenez
According to Calciomercato, Liverpool have shortlisted Jose Gimenez as a potential target.
The Reds will be looking to sign a centre back in the January window with there only two senior centre halves fit in the side at the minute.
The Atletico Madrid defender has played 191 times for the senior side but has an unfortunate injury record having sustained at least 10 injuries in the last two seasons according to Transfermarkt.
What RTK has to say
Sure, he fits the profile, he’s 25-years-old and has a wealth of first team experience.
However, the player’s injury record and price tag make this a pretty unlikely signing.
Gimenez has a release clause of €120m (£109m), Marca reported during the summer transfer window that he won’t be allowed to leave for a penny less.
We will likely focus our attention on Dayot Upamecano who will be available at a fraction of the price.
