Report: Liverpool have Dayot Upamecano as first choice

Liverpool will sign a centre back in the January transfer window, that isn’t up for debate. The Reds currently have just two first team centre backs and even one of those defenders isn’t fit at the minute. The Virgil van Dijk injury has left us shorthanded. According to Ian McGarry has claimed that Liverpool have identified Dayot Upamecano as their first choice target.

Virgil van Dijk injury

Liverpool will be without Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season – it never gets easier to type. It is a nightmare scenario.

The Merseyside Derby saw Jordan Pickford lunge at the Dutchman’s knees after the keeper lost his bearings when chasing a loose ball.

For some reason, the shot stopper wasn’t sent off for his thuggish dive at the centre back.

The Dutchman tore his ACL in the collision, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.

Liverpool want Dayot Upamecano

According to Ian McGarry, Liverpool want Dayot Upamecano to sign on January 1st. The Frenchman is allegedly the club’s ‘first choice’ signing.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

SportBILD last week reported that the Frenchman has a measly £36.5m release clause which is eminently affordable. McGarry told the Transfer Window podcast:

“What we have learned from our sources here at Transfer Window HQ is that Dayot Upamecano, the RB Leipzig centre half, is Liverpool’s first choice in terms of a new centre-half to buy.

“We’ve been told here at the podcast is that Liverpool are already active in trying to get a deal done, which will see a new centre-back arrive on January 1.”

What RTK has to say

This makes sense. Liverpool signing Dayot Upamecano would certainly fit the profile.

The Frenchman is just 21-years-old and already has a wealth of first team experience, including impressive performances in the Champions League.

He has a great passing range and has well over a decade left in his career, he would be a mainstay for the years to come.

Fingers crossed the Reds manage to get this one over the line in time for the 1st of January.
