Liverpool have faced hard times before, we’ve faced impossible tasks. Jürgen Klopp has guided us through them. Remember when we battered Barcelona with two of the front three missing? We appear to have gotten off to a strong start taking on one of our toughest challenges yet. Fabinho showed against Ajax that he has to be the first choice centre back.
Virgil van Dijk injury
The Reds are going to have to rally in the absence of Virgil van Dijk. Everybody will have to run that extra yard in order to cover up for any defensive vulnerabilities.
During the Merseyside Derby, Jordan Pickford recklessly lunged at the knees of the Dutch defender. The Everton keeper was bizarrely not sent off for the thuggish challenge.
Virgil limped off and underwent a scan, a scan which revealed he will require surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.
Fabinho drops in
At the start of the season we saw Fabinho drop into centre back, starting there against Chelsea alongside Virgil van Dijk.

The Brazilian impressed in defence at Stamford Bridge, many called for him to stay there. When Joe Gomez returned to fitness, Fabby returned to the midfield.
Now that Virgil is injured for the season and Joel Matip is nursing a muscle injury, Fabinho has returned to centre back.
Fabinho first choice centre back
Against Ajax we saw Fabinho show why he needs to be the first choice centre back for Jürgen Klopp.
The Brazilian put in a Man of the Match performance in Amsterdam. He went flying into challenges, winning each one of them.
The ex-Monaco man even pulled out an acrobatic goal line clearance, much to the delight of Kopites everywhere.
His composure and tackling at the back was a joy to behold. He has to be the first choice going forward due to the faltering fitness of Joe Gomez and Joel Matip – he’s the ideal solution to the Van Dijk issue.
As long as the midfield is fully fit – Fabinho needs to be in the back line.
