Liverpool don’t often make mistakes in the transfer market. The Reds tend to get it right every time. Michael Edwards has been garnering acclaim from all corners for his shrewd operating. We’ve been buying low and selling high, addressing problem areas of the squad with precision. The Reds may have made a mistake this summer. Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to sign a defender in the January transfer window.

Liverpool summer window
Liverpool did typically astute business during the summer transfer window.
The Reds brought in a world class midfielder in Thiago, an exciting young forward in Diogo Jota and a solid backup left back in Kostas Tsimikas.
They also recouped a great deal of their spend by selling off some fringe starts and youth players who hadn’t made the grade.
The sale of Dejan Lovren, however, wasn’t followed by the signing of a replacement centre back – a move which many thought showed a great deal of faith in the fitness of the defensive lineup.
Carragher urges Liverpool to buy in January
Liverpool this weekend lost Virgil van Dijk for the season, a real tragedy. The Dutchman was cut down in his prime by a thuggish lunge from Jordan Pickford.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the world learned the extent of the injury, Jamie Carragher urged Liverpool to buy a defender in the January transfer window:
“Liverpool have to go into the market in January and not just because of Van Dijk’s injury. They were weak in that area anyway. They lost (Dejan) Lovren before the start of the season… others in those positions are injury prone.”
What RTK has to say
It seems inevitable that Liverpool will invest in the January transfer window.
The Reds have no choice really, we are down to two recognised centre backs in the first team and both have struggled with injuries in the past few years.
Fabinho can fill in but then that means reshuffling the midfield. The window can’t come soon enough, truth be told.
We will need to be decisive, it won’t be a surprise if a transfer is agreed before the window even opens.
