Liverpool have become one of the most feared sides in world football under Jürgen Klopp. The German boss has instilled a ferocious, determined attitude into his side. The gegenpressing system relies on the utmost commitment and determination from his side, few players embody that more than James Milner. As he gets older we will need to think about replacing Milly. Thiago could help Liverpool sign David Alaba on a free – he’d be the ideal Milner replacement.

Ageing James Milner

Ok, sure, James Milner could theoretically play into his 50s. He is that athletically gifted that he just doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

At 34-years-old we do need to consider a long term replacement for the midfielder. So, what does he bring to the side?

Perhaps the most useful aspect of Milner’s game is his versatility. He has played near enough everywhere for the Reds at one time or another.

Milly also brings determination and experience. He was crucial to the implementation of Jürgen Klopp’s gegenpressing philosophy because he led by example.

Liverpool should sign David Alaba

Liverpool should consider a move for David Alaba to replace James Milner.

This isn’t the first time we’ve put forward this idea and it won’t be the last. Remarkably, the Austrian is entering the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich. Therefore, the Reds can negotiate to sign him on a free from January.

Alaba can play anywhere in the defensive line, in the middle of the park or just behind the midfield.

The 28-year-old has even been deployed as a forward for his country at times.

Thiago can help Liverpool land David Alaba

Previously when we’ve suggested that Liverpool should sign David Alaba it has been something of a pipedream.

Now that we’ve signed Thiago the move could be much more realistic given that the pair spent nearly a decade together at Bayern.

The Spaniard would be able to endorse the club to Alaba and the Austrian could feel more comfortable moving somewhere where he’d have a friendly face to help him settle in.

Thiago’s arrival also has the benefit of raising the stature of the club in the transfer market.

Fingers crossed the Spaniard will get his old mate on the blower and we can bag a bargain signing.
