There’s enormous potential in a Joe Gomez & Dayot Upamecano partnership. The Frenchman is reportedly available at the end of the season.
We might just see a partnership between Joe Gomez and Dayot Upamecano in the future. SportBild report that not only is the Frenchman available at the end of the season, but Liverpool want him.
Even better than that, the player would only cost £40m because of a release clause. Surely Liverpool will get involved in that, then.
And there’s a fantastic young partnership on the horizon at Anfield if they do.
The scariest thing about Liverpool right now are the ages of their top players. Just about all of them are pushing 30, including in defence. Virgil van Dijk is now 29 and Joel Matip is the same age – they haven’t got too many years left at the top.
Fortunately, Gomez is there at 23 to lead Liverpool into the future. But he’ll need a partner.
And who better than Upamecano? He’s slightly younger than Gomez, so you’ll get plenty of time out of him, Plus, it allows Gomez to be the more senior defender – Liverpool will want that, seeing as he knows exactly what the team wants and needs.
Upamecano brings experience of his own, however. He’s a Champions League and international defender despite his young age. We can only imagine how good he’ll be in a few years.
And with Gomez, you can say the same. He’s a Champions League and Premier League-winning defender at 23, on top of his 11 England caps.
There is enormous potential, then, in the two of them leading Liverpool’s defence for six or seven years. As Liverpool begin to plan for life after Van Dijk, we can’t think of a better possible signing.
