Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman admits that Liverpool’s Gini Wijnaldum was ‘on his list’ this summer. He still might be, in fact.
Rumours that Ronald Koeman wanted Gini Wijnaldum were a huge part of the summer transfer window. The Mirror went as far as reporting that Liverpool named their price at £15m.
Wijnaldum himself countered that in recent days, though, saying that he didn’t think the Barcelona interest ‘was that serious’. But now Koeman admits that Wijnaldum was ‘on his list’ as he looked to rebuild Barcelona.
Speaking to Dutch outlet Nos, Koeman discussed the prospect of signing more Dutchman. He admitted he’d like a second one ‘but not eight or nine’. When the interviewer brought up Wijnaldum, Koeman said the player was ‘on his list’.
What RTK has to say
If Wijnaldum was on Koeman’s list over the summer, we can safely assume he’s still on it. The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, after all.
It sounds as though Koeman hoped Barcelona would part with some cash to sign his compatriot. That’s the only way they were signing him in 2020. But they can start talking with the player in under three months.
So Liverpool can safely assume that they won’t be the only ones offering Wijnaldum a contract. Unless, of course, they can renew that deal before January.
That will be the plan and why we think it’s a huge three months for both Liverpool and Wijnaldum. If the Reds, in particular, want the player to stay, they better come to terms soon.
Otherwise, we can fully expect Barcelona to try and sway his view.
