Liverpool made a fantastic decision over the summer now Dayot Upamecano is reportedly available. The Reds supposedly want the player.

SportBild claims that Dayot Upamecano is available for £40m next summer thanks to a release clause. More than that, Liverpool supposedly want the defender.

It all makes one summer decision look absolutely perfect.

Risk takers

Liverpool sold Dejan Lovren in the summer. That left them with only three senior centre-halves – Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip. And there’s a real risk there, seeing as the latter two have both had injury concerns over the last few years.

But instead of investing in a new player to replace Lovren, Liverpool have used Fabinho there. They invested the money in midfield instead, relying on the Brazilian to operate as cover – something we thought they might do.

That, again, was a risk. Fabinho hasn’t played centre-half in recent years and those injury concerns of Gomez and Matip mean he may have to play a considerable number of games there.

Fortunately, it’s a risk that appears to have paid off. Fabinho started there against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge – about as a big a test as he’ll get – and played very well.

And now Upamecano’s availability makes the decision seem inspired.

Future planning

If Liverpool can secure Upamecano, they’ll have done sensational business. It would mean they’re bringing in a hugely talented 22-year-old for an open space in their squad. They wouldn’t need to move anyone else on – he’d fit right in.

He’d also be at a wonderful age to take over from Matip and Van Dijk, both of whom are pushing 30. Again, the timing is just absolutely ideal.

There’s a long way to go, of course, but this could be perfect. The decision not to sign anyone this summer would be an incredibly well-judged risk and one everyone at the club could be proud of.

Fingers crossed, then, that Liverpool can get the player in a year.
