Liverpool have one of the meanest defences in world football. At least we thought they did. The Reds have had a less than convincing start to the season defensively, leaking goals through silly errors. According to Bild in Germany, Liverpool could sign Dayot Upamecano next summer – the move would surely see him replace Joe Gomez in the centre of defence.
Who is Dayot Upamecano?
21-years-old and French, Dayot Upamecano plays at centre back for RB Leipzig.
The defender has become one of the most promising players in his position in world football in recent years.
He has already made 117 first team appearances for RB Leipzig despite his young age.
Upamecano has been touted as a target for top clubs around Europe since his ascent to stardom, his performances in the Champions League last season were particularly eye catching.
Liverpool could sign Upamecano
According to Sport BILD in Germany, Liverpool could sign Dayot Upamecano for a bargain fee for €40m (£36.5m) next summer.
The paper has reported that the Frenchman signed a new deal with the club which will keep him there until 2023 but with a release clause of €40m.
It is also claimed that the German side are resigned to losing the centre back and that they have already signed his replacement with Josko Gvardiol arriving from Dinamo Zagreb.
What RTK has to say
If Liverpool did sign Dayot Upamecano then he surely would be taking Joe Gomez’s place in the side, particularly given the 23-year-old’s patchy form.
That would be the short term plan, given the two player’s ages we would likely see them line up together in the future.
At just 21-years-old there is no denying that Upamecano is one of the finest defensive prospects in the world, whoever bags him next could well have him for the better part of his career.
We can just hope that this is true, £36.5m for such a player would be an absolute bargain.
