Liverpool suffered a humiliating 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday. We try very hard to pick just three players who must improve.

Joe Gomez

Gomez put in a very worrying performance. While the first Aston Villa goal wasn’t his fault, he certainly could have taken up a better position. But the third was on him.

He inexplicably let Ollie Watkins inside onto his stronger foot, allowing him a much easier finish. But honestly, that was just one example of a terrible game.

The centre-half was dragged off in the second-half as Jurgen Klopp opted for Fabinho there out of position. That’s not a good sign for Gomez, who may sit out against Everton next time out. And he couldn’t really argue.

Roberto Firmino

Firmino did get an assist for Mohamed Salah’s second, so it wasn’t all bad. But unfortunately, the rest of his game definitely was. Firmino struggled to make anything happen, struggled to hold onto the ball, and struggled to make decisions.

He’d frequently wait too long to play a pass, or he’d be out of position, or he’d just mess up. This was one of his worst performances in a Liverpool shirt and Klopp seemed to bring on Takumi Minamino at half-time to help him out, as much as anything.

It wasn’t enough, though, and Firmino, too, went off in the second half. The Brazilian has enough credit in the bank that he’d won’t get dropped anytime soon. But we can’t have more performances like this one.

Adrian

While the other two on this list need to improve to meet their own standards, Adrian is different. He needs to improve simply to have a career with Liverpool.

His mistake for the first was truly awful but he never really improved. In fact, Liverpool are lucky it was 7-2 as Ollie Watkins nearly made it eight as Adrian embarrassed himself again.

The ball came across, Adrian went walkabout, and Watkins smashed it off the bar. It really should have been eight.

Liverpool may want to go and find a new goalkeeper, or even promote a youngster. But if Adrian does get another chance, he simply has to take it. Another showing like this – especially after his mistakes against Atletico Madrid – and he probably shouldn’t play again.
