Liverpool have had an extraordinary transfer window. The Reds have brought in an elite midfielder, a young forward full of potential and backup for a key player – as well as a number of promising young players. It looks as though one alleged Reds target is set to get away – outlets in France have reported that Rennes have agreed a deal for Jeremy Doku. Have Liverpool missed out?
Jeremy Doku and Liverpool
Michael Edwards is always looking to the future, a couple of years ago he was already on the lookout for Sadio Mane’s successor.
Goal reported over the summer that Liverpool had tried to sign Jeremy Doku before he joined Anderlecht.
The winger was invited to the Melwood training ground, Jürgen Klopp and Steven Gerrard spoke with him in an effort to persuade him to join the Reds.
However, the youngster decided that joining Anderlecht would be the best thing for his development as there was a clearer and quicker pathway to the first team.
Rennes to sign Jeremy Doku
According to a report from Get French Football News, Rennes have agreed a deal to sign Jeremy Doku.
The transfer will be worth a reported £23.5m and will include a sell on percentage clause.
The teenager will allegedly sign a 5-year-contract with the Ligue 1 side. Just a couple of weeks ago reports on the continent claimed that Liverpool could sign Doku during this window.
Have Liverpool missed out on Doku?
Given that the winger has been described as a ‘diamond‘ by Kevin de Bruyne and the Reds wanted him as Mane’s successor just a couple of years ago, this could be a missed opportunity for Liverpool.
However, the club may feel that they don’t need the wonderkid at the minute. We have Harvey Elliott coming through on the wing and have just recruited Diogo Jota to backup Sadio Mane.
Fingers crossed this one doesn’t come back to bite us, it would have been too early for him to join us anyway. Maybe we’ll revisit this one in a few years time.
