Liverpool have learned their Champions League group for this season. The Reds will be looking to reach another final under Jürgen Klopp but first they have to get past Ajax, Atalanta and FC Midtjylland. Bizarrely, Thomas Gronnemark links all the clubs in Liverpool’s group.
Liverpool’s Champions League group
The Reds were of course in pot one for the draw on account of being English champions.
Ajax were drawn in next, a threatening prospect despite not making it out of the group stage last season.
Atalanta were the third team drawn, a potential stumbling block due to their free flowing, fast paced football.
FC Midtjylland were the final team drawn, the Danish champions are participating in the group stage for the first time ever.
Thomas Gronnemark link
Liverpool’s well documented throw in coach Thomas Gronnemark has worked for every club in Liverpool’s Champions League group.
The Danish coach holds the record for the longest throw in ever recorded, clocking in at 51.33 metres.
There was some hubbub when the Reds first appointed the coach, Andy Gray made some snide remarks.
However, his appointment has certainly paid off, we’ve been creating more and defending better from throw in situations. Just look at how we forced a foul throw out of Hector Bellerin this week.
What RTK has to say
It is certainly an interesting if bizarre link.
There aren’t many throw in coaches about so for Gronnemark to have worked for all the teams involved in our group is some coincidence.
We will all be paying close attention to if there is any impact made from throw ins during these games. Perhaps these teams have a tiny edge against us that other sides don’t?
We’ll have to see how it plays out, for now, we can just hope it remains an interesting factoid.
