Liverpool have made some game changing signings in recent years. Michael Edwards and co have been identifying the problem areas and fixing them one by one with decisive moves. Perhaps one of the most transformational buys was our goalkeeper. Alisson Becker has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo by David James.
Alisson at Liverpool
Liverpool signed Alisson Becker from Roma in a £67m deal in 2018.
The Brazilian arrived just weeks after the Reds had lost the Champions League final as a result of two shocking errors from Loris Karius.
Virgil van Dijk had arrived some six months earlier to fix a shaky back line but there was still a glaring issue that needed to be resolved to stop the Reds from conceding goals – Ali fixed that.
Alisson and Ronaldo
Speaking to the Blood Red Podcast, David James compared Alisson Becker to Cristiano Ronaldo. The ex-Reds shot stopper was full of praise for the Brazilian, telling the show:
“In the end it’s about biology and whether you are capable of going further and faster and higher but with Alisson, you are looking at a keeper who everything he does is so good.
“He might be a bit Cristiano Ronaldo-esque in the sense that he doesn’t have to do something exceptional to still be at the highest level.”
What RTK has to say
David James has made an astute observation here. The Brazilian goalkeeper has been at the top of the game since he joined the Reds, he’s been critical to our transformation.
His brilliance has become so normal that you can often forget just how good he is, as James said, he doesn’t have to do something exceptional – his consistency is the exceptional thing.
We saw this against Arsenal, he barely had anything to do yet he managed to pull off two one-on-one saves against Alex Lacazette. That’s quality.
