Liverpool cruised to victory at Anfield last night, brushing Arsenal aside in a 3-1 victory. The Reds were at their typical best, swaggering through the game and dominating the ball. One midfielder in particular wouldn’t let the opposition rest. Last night showed why Liverpool need to give Gini Wijnaldum a new contract and fend off interest from Barcelona.

Wijnaldum v Arsenal

Gini Wijnaldum showed against Arsenal just why he deserves a new contract.

The Dutchman was utterly relentless throughout the game, he hounded the visitors with an incredibly intensity.

Perhaps the most impressive moments of his night came when the Reds were just 2-1 up, with five minutes remaining he was charging down opposition defenders as if it was still the opening minutes of the game.

His intensity and determination are critical to our midfield on nights like this, he doesn’t the opposition settle on the ball.

Barcelona interest

Weeks ago Sport claimed that Ronald Koeman had made signing Gini Wijnaldum a ‘priority’.

The Barcelona coach reportedly wanted to make the Reds’ midfielder part of his Orange revolution at the Camp Nou.

The ex-Netherlands coach enjoyed great success with Gini at international level and he is now looking to replicate this at club level, hoping to pair him with Frenkie de Jong in the middle.

Wijnaldum new contract

There hasn’t been any news recently about whether or not Gini Wijnaldum will get a new contract at Anfield.

The Reds midfielder is now in the final season of his deal at Anfield, meaning he can negotiate a free transfer away from January.

Liverpool simply cannot allow that to happen. The 29-year-old is such a valuable presence in the dressing room and on the pitch, he leads by example with his pressing and we simply cannot afford to give that up, certainly not for free.

Sure, he’s entering his 30s but his engine will surely see him through a few more years.
