Liverpool have one of the strongest midfields in world football at the minute. The Reds already had one of the most functional, unstoppable midfields in the world but they added a significant amount of panache with the signing of Thiago Alcantara. As a result there are some players who need to be moved on for the good of their career, they won’t get a game for the Reds. Jürgen Klopp made a smart move playing Marko Grujic against Lincoln City, it put him in the shop window.
Grujic at Liverpool
Way back in 2016, Marko Grujic became Jürgen Klopp’s first signing at Liverpool.
The Serbian arrived on Merseyside with a burgeoning reputation. He was being compared to the good and the great, James Pearce drew a comparison to Steven Gerrard.
He was loaned out to Cardiff City and Hertha Berlin, spending two moderately successful seasons in the German capital.
Since his last spell at Hertha came to an end there has been a general acceptance that he’ll be leaving permanently soon.
Grujic v Lincoln City
Jürgen Klopp put Marko Grujic into the starting lineup to face Lincoln City.
The midfielder went on to have a thoroughly impressive performance. He was commanding in the middle of the park, winning the ball back and using it well throughout the game.
The strong display was capped with a goal towards the end of the game, one he thoroughly deserved thanks to his industry in the middle of the park.
Given that James Pearce has said that Marko Grujic ‘will move on’ this summer, the decision to play him against Lincoln City was a smart one.
By starting him in the cup, the boss was able to put the Serbian in the shop window, his strong showing will have surely impressed any potential buyers. The Reds are thought to be looking for around £20m for the ex-Red Star man.
