Liverpool have had a week and a half. The Reds have signed two top talents and battered one of their fiercest rivals. Chelsea were brushed aside at Stamford Bridge to cap a weekend which already had Kopites over the moon. Speaking ahead of this week’s EFL Cup clash, our assistant manager spoke about one of the new signings. Pep Lijnders has said Liverpool ‘deserves’ a player like Thiago.

The Thiago Saga

Liverpool were chasing Thiago all summer according to the press.

There were links for months. When it emerged that the Spaniard had told Bayern Munich that he didn’t want to sign a new contract as he entered the final year of his stay, newspapers began linking him with all and sundry.

Liverpool eventually agreed a cut price deal for Thiago, signing him for just £20m plus £5m in bonuses.

Lijnders on Thiago

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Reds’ EFL Cup tie with Lincoln City, Jürgen Klopp’s assistant was asked about the club’s new signings. Pep Lijnders said of Thiago:

“Good teams need good players. We’re really happy that he’s with us. This team especially deserves a player like him because he will make sure that we keep evolving.

“Teams adapt, teams try to destroy our plans but what’s most important is that we stay unpredictable.

“Unpredictability means that from each position we can play the last pass and we can speed up the game as much as we can and Thiago does that for us. He’s a great signing. We haven’t bought a problem we’ve bought a solution.”

What RTK has to say

I could honestly listen to Pep Lijnders speak about Liverpool all day.

Whenever he takes the press conferences his enthusiasm and love for the club and the game shines through and it is just so heartwarming to hear.

His words on Thiago were carefully selected and perfectly sum up what he will bring to the side. For a while we have struggled against a low block, now we will tear these blocks apart thanks to the unpredictability that the Spaniard brings.
