Curtis Jones delivered again on Thursday as he continues to show he’s the midfielder Liverpool wanted. The Reds found what they needed under their nose.

Liverpool may have only played Lincoln City but Jones’s brace is exciting. The teenager bagged two good goals in the first-half that killed the game and set up a simply second half for the Reds.

But while the opposition were lacking, Jones still demonstrated his talent. And it’s talent that makes him the midfielder Liverpool have wanted for quite some time.

Goals from midfield

Liverpool have wanted an attacking midfielder for years now. They very nearly signed Nabil Fekir back in 2018, after all, while reports claim they’ve watched Houssem Aouar for five years.

Then there was Kai Havertz. The Independent claimed back in February that Liverpool liked him a lot but couldn’t justify his £80m price.

But it increasingly looks like Jones can be that productive, attacking midfielder.

The types of goals he scores, as well as his technique on the ball, separates him from Liverpool’s other options. No one else quite looks as comfortable as he does near the opposition box. No one else scores with the authority he showed on Thursday, either.

Will he ever be as good as Havertz, for instance? We don’t know. Havertz had certainly accomplished a lot more than Jones has by the time he turned 20.

But in terms of what Liverpool clearly wanted and what Jones brings, he can be that kind of midfielder. It’s something we’ve mentioned before and it just becomes more and more apparent with each great display.

The fact he was right under their nose the whole time is quite remarkable. He could end up making that £80m decision a game-changing one.
