Liverpool have been active in the transfer market in the past week. The Reds have surprised us all with one signing and ended a protracted saga with another. Kopites have been delighted with the business and with a convincing win over Chelsea. After all of this the press have decided to get our hopes up again. L’Equipe have linked Liverpool with a move for Kylian Mbappe next summer. Liverpool would surely have to sell Sadio Mane or Mo Salah to sign Kylian Mbappe.
Spending Spree Reds
Liverpool made a massive statement last week with the signing of Thiago Alcantara.
The Spanish playmaker was in the last year of his contract at Bayern Munich and unwilling to sign a new deal.
Michael Edwards capitalised on this and brought him to Anfield for just £20m plus £5m in bonuses.
A day later the club confirmed the surprise signing of Diogo Jota from Wolves.
The Portuguese forward joined the club for £41m, taking everybody by surprise.
Liverpool want Mbappe
According to L’Equipe in France, Liverpool are already plotting a summer move for Kylian Mbappe.
The Reds are said to be in regular contact with the French superstar’s camp.
Next summer the French forward will be entering the final year of his contract at PSG.
Given the player’s enormous market value, this could force the Parisians to do business lest they risk losing him on a free transfer, missing out on a humongous payday.
Liverpool need to sell Salah or Mane first
There is surely no way that Liverpool sign Kylian Mbappe without selling Sadio Mane or Mo Salah.
The club’s wage bill would balloon if we had all three superstars at the club at once.
Not to mention any transfer fee that would be paid for Mbappe would have to be recouped from somewhere.
Next summer Mane and Salah will be 29-years-old, Mbappe will be 22-years-old.
The club could take the difficult decision to move on one of their talismanic forwards in the interest of longevity.
Nobody wants to see Salah or Mane go but if the opportunity presents itself to swap in a superstar who has a decade left at the top then it could be hard for FSG to pass up.
Mane and Salah’s resale values will be steadily declining once they hit their 30s and this could be the club’s only chance to sign Mbappe.
It is not a pleasant thought to see one of our fan favourites leaving but sometimes you’ve got to make sacrifices for the greater good.
