Houssem Aouar is reportedly available for £54m. The Frenchman was supposedly a priority Liverpool target but the Reds found better.
The Telegraph report that Aouar is still up for grabs – if a team pays £54m. That team could well be Arsenal, who the report name as interested in the player.
But it could also interest Liverpool. The Mirror claimed at the start of the window that the Reds had two priority targets this summer – Timo Werner and Aouar.
Now, we know how the Werner one went but Aouar is still about. We pointed out after his display against Manchester City in the Champions League that he remains a fantastic prospect. One who suits Liverpool, too.
Right now, however, it certainly look as though Liverpool simply found better.
Houssem Aouar v Thiago
Liverpool officially signed Thiago last week and his debut was a very promising one. It’s difficult to see, though, how the Reds could sign both players.
They’re each creative midfielders, after all. And Liverpool went for the best one.
That’s not to say that Aouar isn’t a very talented player, of course. But Thiago is an elite-level talent and one of the best midfielders in the world. Aouar merely could be one day.
And if Liverpool wanted someone who could improve their world-class team, Thiago was the answer. Aouar could have been a great addition but he’s not yet on the level of the Reds’ best players.
Thiago very much is and he improves the team while adding a new possession-based style. He’s the signing for now, the one who immediately evolves the team into something, hopefully, even better.
As talented as Aouar is, he wouldn’t have been able to do that.
