Liverpool have finally pulled their finger out in the transfer market having reportedly agreed a fee for Thiago Alcantara. The Spaniard is expected to arrive on Merseyside for a medical imminently. The Reds may not be done with their transfer business, though. A Bola in Portugal has claimed that Liverpool are tracking Nuno Mendes of Sporting.

Who is Nuno Mendes?

Let’s clear this up – the Reds are reportedly interested in 18-year-old defender Nuno Mendes, not Portuguese chef at the Chiltern Firehouse, Nuno Mendes.

The teenaged left back can also play as a centre half and has already made nine first team appearances for Sporting.

He comes from good stock, the Sporting academy has produced some fine talents down the years, the most obvious of which being Cristiano Ronaldo.

The paper has claimed that Arsenal, Liverpool, Juventus and Milan are all ‘attentive’ to the player’s progress.

However, it is claimed that the Portuguese side would only be willing to let him go if his release clause was triggered, a release clause which stands at €45m.

What RTK has to say

This is an interesting one.

Liverpool signing Nuno Mendes makes sense on the very surface, he is a young, talented footballer with some first team experience.

He will likely get even more game time for the senior side this season after impressing at the back end of the last campaign.

However, at €45m he must surely be an unrealistic target for the Reds, particularly given how restrained the club has been in the transfer market this summer.

He could be a signing for the future should he be available when the club’s finances have recovered from the impact of the global health crisis.

Although, will we splash out on a left back so soon after signing Kostas Tsimikas?
