Liverpool have produced some of the best players in the club’s history at the academy. The Reds have seen Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher come through the youth ranks in the past with Trent Alexander-Arnold the most recent superstar to emerge. Another Liverpool youngster seems destined for greatness with Neco Williams nominated for the Golden Boy award.
The last year has seen Neco Williams establish himself as Liverpool’s go to deputy full back.
The Welshman is now firmly the second choice right back with Jürgen Klopp having played James Milner and Joe Gomez there in the past – even Fabinho had a pop.
Impressive performances in the cups, including a standout display against Everton in January, saw the youngster given a flurry of Premier League starts towards the end of the title winning campaign.
Neco Williams Golden Boy
The 19-year-olds contributions haven’t gone unnoticed across the continent.
Neco Williams has been nominated for the Golden Boy award – an accolade given to the most impressive player under the age of 21 playing in a top division in Europe.
Italian publication Tuttosport has been handing out the award since 2003, Rafael van der Vaart winning the inaugural title.
Since then Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe have lifted the trophy, as well as Raheem Sterling and Paul Pogba.
What RTK has to say
Sure, there’s no chance Neco Williams is going to win the Golden Boy award, not unless he scores 10 against Chelsea this weekend. Even then at least one of the goals would have to be an overhead kick.
The Welshman is up against the likes of Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland, there’s stiff competition.
However, his nomination is testament to his progress in the last year, we can only hope that he continues to kick on this season.
