This Saturday is the traditional curtain raiser for the new season: the Community Shield. Premier League champions Liverpool will take on FA Cup winners Arsenal at Wembley to compete for a title that, well, nobody cares about. The fixture does have some use, though. Liverpool can make a decision on Rhian Brewster based on how he performs against Arsenal.
Stunning Swansea spell
In January we saw Rhian Brewster loaned out to Swansea City after the Reds brought in Joe Hardy from Brentford.
The 20-year-old went on to score 11 times for the Swans, firing them into the playoffs on the final day.
The temporary moved proved that he has what it takes to score goals in senior football, getting Kopites excited about his future.
Brewster continued his fine form into the pre-season.
The youngster has netted three goals in two games in the last week, scoring once against Stuttgart and twice against Red Bull Salzburg.
The strikes showcased his instinct for being in the right place at the right time as well as his lethal finishing ability.
The youngster’s goalscoring form since January has led many to wonder whether or not he’ll be kept at Anfield for the coming season.
Arsenal acid test
Liverpool could make a decision on whether to loan Rhian Brewster out again based on Saturday’s tie with Arsenal.
So far we have seen the 20-year-old bang them in in the Championship and in friendly ties.
Can he bang them in against Premier League opposition though?
If we are to keep Rhian Brewster around this season we need to be able to rely on him to come up with the goods when needed.
Roberto Firmino can’t play every game, so Jürgen Klopp will have to choose between Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster for the deputy spot – who will be heading out on loan? A strong performance against Arsenal could see Rhian Brewster cement his place in the squad for the season ahead.
