Squad numbers are incredibly important in football, they are loaded with symbolism and sentimentality. Squad numbers tell us where you are going to play and in some cases who you are going to be charged with emulating. Liverpool recently announced a change in shirt for one of their brightest prospects; Kopites have been ecstatic after it was announced that Curtis Jones will be changing to number 17 for the 2020/21 season.

A great responsibility

For those unconnected to Liverpool FC the number 17 may seem relatively innocuous, even some younger Kopites may be unaware of the significance of the move.

The number 17 jersey was famously worn by Steven Gerrard when he was breaking into the Liverpool first team.

The decision to give Curtis Jones the number 17 shows where he is in his career. The club believe that he will be the successor to Steven Gerrard and that he is now at the “Gerrard 17” stage of his development.

Fans lap it up

Kopites have been lapping up the news, overjoyed that the latest next best thing from the academy is poised to follow in the steps of the club’s greatest ever Scouser.

We have never managed to replace the irreplaceable Captain Fantastic, how could you? This announcement will give Kopites plenty of cause for optimism.

One fan account pointed out just how iconic the number is.

Another account was quick to note that Stevie G isn’t the only legend to wear the shirt…

The number is an indication that we can expect Curtis Jones in the Premier League next season, they aren’t ready.

This Kopite is hoping for the Scouser to recreate one of Gerrard’s most famous moments in the 17 shirt.

Heck, why not go the whole hog and copy Gerrard’s hair style from his number 17 days?

Of course, there’s always one who is more concerned with incoming transfers…
