Liverpool are intensifying their scouting of Weston McKennie, according to reports. The American midfielder has 19 caps for his country.
This comes from 90min, who claim an exclusive. Liverpool supposedly believe that McKennie could be a solid addition – but want to scout him further to be sure.
That suggests that no move is imminent but that we could see links between the two strengthen in the future. But as Liverpool’s midfield continues to age, the Reds will look for youth to come in.
McKennie, at 21, is a name they’ve turned back to several times, says 90min. Some decent progress next season and Liverpool might just make a move.
What RTK has to say
McKennie does appear to have a bright future and he fits Liverpool’s profile, too. He’s a defensive-minded midfield but the American is also versatile.
He can play in the holding role or in a flat midfield, as well as being able to fill in at centre-half. He’s even played wide on the right once this season, and added three goals in his 28 appearances.
A hard-working, physical, versatile player fits the mould at Liverpool. The midfield is almost entirely those types, after all, and thus isn’t easy to see how McKennie could fit in.
But there’s no rush. The midfield is packed at the moment and McKennie wouldn’t be a first-teamer right away. As long as he doesn’t move anywhere else, Liverpool can afford to wait and see how he develops over the next year.
He’s certainly one to keep an eye on.
