AS Roma can’t reject an offer of over £55m for Nicolo Zaniolo, according to reports out of Italy. Liverpool supposedly want the player.

This comes from Corriere Dello Sport. They lay out the situation at Roma – and it’s not an easy one. The club doesn’t have secure finances and as a result, they can’t afford to reject good offers for their players.

Their principal asset is Zaniolo. Everyone at Roma – and in Italy as a whole – regard Zaniolo incredibly highly. He’s one of the brightest young prospects in Italian football. Possibly the brightest.

And thus he’s also worth the most at Roma. If Roma want to sort out their finances quickly, then selling the player does just that. They’d want at least £55m, the report claims, and any offer in that range would need accepting.

Juventus are the only team in Italy who have the means to make that happen – but not right now. Roma would want cash for the player, not any sort of player-exchange, as they owe Inter 15% of a next sale.

So desperate are they to keep the player, though, that they’re considering other sales. Both Justin Kluivert and Cengiz Under could leave in order to keep Zaniolo.

What RTK has to say

Multiple Italian outlets have linked Zaniolo and Liverpool. Il Tempo claimed a link in May, TuttoSport in early June, with Il Sussidiaro before that.

He’s certainly a fantastic player and one we’d love to see at Liverpool. Whether it’s likely, we’re not sure. £55m is still a lot of money right now, given the economic crash. He’d be something of a bargain in a normal summer, though.

If things change financially, perhaps Liverpool could make an offer for Zaniolo. But right now, he still seems too expensive.

We certainly hope the Reds can make things work, however.
