Report: Jurgen Klopp 'thinks highly' of on-the-move Thiago Alcantara

Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of Thiago Alcantara, according to reports in Germany. The Spaniard will reportedly leave Bayern Munich before long.

This comes from Bild, who believes that Thiago backed out of a new deal in Bavaria. Instead, he wants to try something new – or return home to Barcelona – while still in his peak.

This would be his final real chance to join a top club as a key player, after all, given he’s 29.

Bild only names one team as interested, however – Liverpool. Bayern are supposedly discussing the Reds’ alleged interest, while they claim Klopp ‘thinks highly’ of Thiago.

On top of that, they believe Liverpool have ‘the greatest need’ for additional quality in central midfield. But that’s entirely up for debate, of course.

What RTK has to say

It would hardly be a surprise if Klopp does think highly of Thiago as he’s a wonderful player. He’s experienced, boasts nine titles in his career and is a massively talented technical player.

His injury record isn’t as bad as it once was, either. Before this fractured season (he’s played 35 times this campaign) Thiago managed over 40 games in three of his last four seasons. With 32 in the outlier.

Could Liverpool use him, though? Well, he certainly wouldn’t be one for the future so it would be purely down to whether there’s a need right now. And that’s debatable.

A technical, passing midfielder is the one thing Liverpool don’t have, of course. But how badly do they need that? Again, it’s debatable. For the right price, Thiago is good enough that the Reds could perhaps move, though.

It would have to be a very, very good price, however. There’s no long-term investment in Thiago and that makes him a risk. Especially at a time when the Reds don’t want to spend – they couldn’t justify £50m for 24-year-old Timo Werner, after all.

So, all things considered, we can’t see this one happening.
