Everton could play a key role in Liverpool’s Kalidou Koulibaly pursuit, according to reports. The Toffees could take away the Reds’ big chance.
This comes from TuttoMercatoWeb, who believe both Merseyside clubs will challenge Napoli in the transfer window. Both in very different ways, however.
The Liverpool one is fairly obvious, though. The Reds want Koulibaly, according to the outlet, and are ‘above all’ other suitors in the chase. There is a stumbling block, however.
Yes, you guessed it, the asking price. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wants around £90m for Koulibaly, a figure hardly anyone can match. Especially Liverpool, who recently pulled out of a deal for Timo Werner on financial reasons.
But there could be a way for Napoli to lower that price. They want Gabriel from Lille but face a similar problem with the French team’s £27m asking price.
One way they could get that money, according to TMW, is a big sale. Koulibaly would be the obvious one, then, given he’d guarantee a large price and free up a spot for Gabriel in defence.
One unsolvable problem, however, is that Napoli are apparently behind Everton in the chase. Gabriel has made visits to Everton already, they say, and Napoli will struggle to negotiate with Lille as a result.
What RTK has to say
If Napoli can’t get Gabriel, then they lose their reason to sell Koulibaly at a more reasonable price. It does appear to be that simple, if TMW is accurate.
And thus Everton really can hurt Liverpool’s chances. We can’t imagine that the Reds will move for any player at £90m and they’d need that price to lower significantly to entertain a deal.
Maybe Napoli can afford to lower it if they can easily replace him with Gabriel at a profit. If Everton remove Gabriel from the table, however, there’s just no chance.
We don’t think there’s much of a chance that Koulibaly arrives anyway but it certainly appears that Everton can eliminate any chance whatsoever.
