Three Liverpool players received nominations for the 2020 European Golden Boy award. You can vote now towards a winner.
Tuttosport have put out their annual list of the world’s best players under 21. Currently at 100 players, a public vote will whittle it down to 20 before a select group of journalists name their 2020 winner.
Three Reds made the list this time, too – although, none of the three stands any real chance of winning. In fact, the chosen three are actually quite surprising.
Certainly the least surprising of the trio. Jones shot into the limelight this season as Liverpool’s youngsters performed cup heroics. The highlight, of course, was Jones’s incredible long-range winner against Everton back in January.
The Scouser certainly put himself on the map this season and fully deserves his mention.
A surprising one, in all honesty. Larouci hasn’t played in the Premier League yet and few would have him down as one of the standouts of Liverpool’s cup run.
That’s not to say Larouci isn’t a talented young player – just that he hasn’t quite achieved as much as others yet.
Sepp van den Berg
Again, quite a surprising one. Van den Berg is actually one of the more experienced members of Liverpool’s youngsters, having played 22 Eredivisie games.
But his performances this year haven’t particularly outshone the rest. In fact, he’s only played one game in 2020 – against Shrewsbury Town in a 1-0 win.
He played well but enough to make the 2020 Golden Boy list? We wouldn’t have thought so. Still, like Larouci, that’s no comment on his ability as Van den Berg looks like a very talented youngster.
But when there’s no room for Harvey Elliott, for instance, you do wonder how they picked the Anfield trio.
