Liverpool are looking at signing Thomas Meunier this summer, according to reports. The Belgian will almost certainly be on the move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Le10Sport makes the claim. The French outlet believes that Meunier will almost certainly leave PSG when his contract expires this summer.

There are several clubs looking at him, however. Borussia Dortmund and Napoli, as the report names, are Liverpool’s principal rivals.

Dortmund, in particular, could be trouble. Achraf Hakimi is set to return to Real Madrid at the end of the season, leaving the Germans without a first-choice right-back.

That is a role that could tempt Meunier, especially when Liverpool are simply offering a squad role. The report makes it clear that the Reds aren’t trying to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, rather they want a rotation option.

What RTK has to say

This is a difficult one to call, really. Meunier would certainly improve the squad and be a fantastic backup to Alexander-Arnold. In that regard, we can see why Liverpool would want him on a free transfer.

The player’s position is trickier, though. You’d imagine that he’d prefer a first-choice role with Dortmund – they’re a good side and they can offer his first-team football, after all.

That does seem better for the Belgian than second-choice at Anfield. But then, he apparently wants to stay with PSG, who don’t see him as first-choice going forward.

In that case, perhaps he prefers the idea of being at a winning club. Dortmund aren’t quite at that point, while Liverpool certainly are.

In truth, we can’t see this one happening, regardless. Liverpool don’t need to add a new player just to backup Alexander-Arnold, especially when Jurgen Klopp is reportedly high on Neco Williams.

We, for one, would much prefer to see the Liverpool youngster take up that second-choice role.
