Newcastle United want Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, according to journalist Dominic King. The Magpies could have the pulling power to make a move happen.

King was talking to Radio City on Wednesday where he discussed Shaqiri. The Swiss winger could be very available, apparently, and Liverpool may sell.

“Newcastle, I’m told, have made enquiries to [Shaqiri’s] representatives to sound him out,” said King. “Whether he would be interested, if the takeover goes through and they have money to spend, then he would be a firm target.

“Liverpool have made it clear that they won’t stand in his way if he wants to move on because his chances to play football next season will be limited.”

What RTK has to say

This is hardly the first we’ve heard of Shaqiri potentially leaving this summer. The Echo said recently that Liverpool valued the player at around £25m before the current uncertainty.

That figure may cut in half, however, according to that report. And if it does, then several clubs could come in for Shaqiri.

Swiss outlet Blick recently claimed that Sevilla and CSKA Moscow want him. CalcioMercato believes Roma are after him, too. Fotomac in Turkey says Galatasary could bid.

But if that Newcastle takeover happens, we’d expect Shaqiri to move up there. It would be a very exciting project that could almost certainly offer him great financial terms. The latter, in particular, is something few clubs can afford in the current climate.

Then it just comes down to his price and if Liverpool can still get that £25m. Hopefully, they can pull that off.
