Inter want Hertha Berlin forward Matheus Cunha, according to reports. If they sign him, it would clear the path for Liverpool to bring in Timo Werner.
Sky Italy makes the claim. They say that Inter have been looking at Cunha for many months but recently established contact with his representatives.
They may want to bring in Cunha for next season – although, that won’t be simple. The Brazilian only joined Hertha in January from RB Leipzig, signing a ‘long-term’ contract in the process.
Cunha’s performances since have caught the eye, however. He’s only played seven games for Hertha but scored four in his last five in the Bundesliga.
As the Sky report says, Barcelona are eyeing up Lautaro Martinez. If they sign him, Inter would need a replacement, which in this case, is surely Cunha.
And that’s good news for Liverpool. Recent reports suggested that Werner was at the top of their list to replace Martinez and they’d be a real threat in that race.
We think they’d offer Werner what Liverpool can’t – a place as the star of the team. Inter would also have the funds to make a deal happen if they sold Martinez and, potentially, Mauro Icardi, too.
That would scupper Liverpool’s reported plans to lower Werner’s price. Having an opponent in the race who can offer his £50m fee would eliminate any chance of RB Leipzig budging.
But if Inter do move on to Cunha, then the Reds are overwhelming favourites for Werner. They may even manage to talk Leipzig down.
