Liverpool want Nuno Mendes from Sporting, according to reports out of Portugal. The Reds hope to beat Manchester United to the teenager.
Portuguese outlet A Bola makes the claim. They believe that Liverpool want Nuno Mendes quite badly and fear a fight for his signature.
That fight would principally be against United, apparently. The Reds, however, want to sign him quickly, before their rivals have a chance to react.
How do you achieve that? By offering lots of money, of course. Liverpool have two choices, according to the report – offer £13m with a percentage of a future sale, or nearly £18m as a one-off fee.
So what would Liverpool get for their money? Mendes is a 17-year-old left-back for Sporting who has played 17 games in Portugal’s Revelation League this season.
And he’s clearly rated very highly, given the teams and fees named in this report.
What RTK has to say
Liverpool would have to rate Nuno Mendes spectacularly highly to bid near £18m for him. He’s not going to play in their first-team, after all, and is firmly one for the future.
And when you compare that figure to other youth-products, it seems mad. Sepp van den Berg, for instance, arrived at the same age – and with plenty of senior experience – for just £1.3m initially.
That’s quite a way short of the £15m with add ons that A Bola believes Mendes would cost.
If Mendes is a very, very special talent then we can maybe see this one happening. As it is, though, it seems like too much money.
