Recent reports suggest that both Juventus and Barcelona are considering moves for two principal Liverpool targets. The Reds have a real fight on their hands, then.

The Mirror claimed on May 1st that Liverpool will play things very cautious this summer. So cautious, in fact, that they may not make any moves at all.

That wasn’t the original plan, of course – that was to sign Timo Werner and Houssem Aouar.

The Independent doesn’t go quite as far as the Mirror, though. They say that the Reds may still sign players this summer, they’re just waiting to see how things play out. On that thinking, we could still see moves for Werner and Aouar, then.

But lost time could make things tough as two European giants have reportedly added Werner and Aouar to their respective shortlists.

The first report, from Mundo Deportivo, suggests that Barcelona may move for Werner. Lautaro Martinez appears to remain their principle target but Werner is now a serious second. If Inter won’t sell, they’ll turn to Werner.

The second is from Le10Sport and claims that Juventus will want Aouar if Miralem Pjanic leaves. Juventus have apparently considered the player for the last two years but may finally make their move this summer.

What RTK has to say

The saving grace for Liverpool here is that there are big ‘ifs’ hanging over both pursuits. Barcelona will only move for Werner if they can’t get Martinez and Juventus will only move for Aouar if they do sell Pjanic.

Liverpool can certainly win fights for both players but time isn’t on their side. It doesn’t look as though things will become uncomplicated any time soon and so any moves will come down to desperation.

Signing players will be risky for everyone – it depends how prepared you are to take that risk. Liverpool, with probably the best team in the world right now, are not desperate for big signings.

Barcelona are, however, and Juventus will be if they sell. So while Liverpool are sensible to wait, they may find that other teams move before they give themselves the chance to.
