Barcelona look likely to have a key role in Liverpool’s pursuit for Timo Werner if you believe recent reports. The Reds aren’t the only ones eyeing up the German.
There’s no real suggestion that Barcelona want Werner themselves. Instead, they certainly appear to be looking elsewhere – squarely at Internazionale’s Lautaro Martinez.

That’s according to the continuous cycle of reports out of both Spain and Italy, anyway. Sport, for instance, claimed on Thursday that Barcelona will offer £52m and two players for the Argentine.
So why’s that relevant to Liverpool and Werner? Well, because Inter appear to want the RB Leipzig forward to replace Martinez.
Inter’s interest
Gazzetta Dello Sport said as much on Thursday. They even believe that Werner’s release clause could drop by around £9m, too, making him even more tempting for the Italians.
And so it seems that if Barcelona do convince Inter to sell Martinez, Liverpool have real competition. Especially at a time when Liverpool are reportedly being cautious.
The Independent said in recent days that the Reds are still leading the way for £50m Werner but don’t want to jump too soon. There’s too much uncertainty about, after all, and spending big is a risk. Especially when Liverpool aren’t desperate for a new striker.
But Inter may become desperate. If Barcelona make them an offer that’s too good to refuse, they’ll need a quality replacement striker. There won’t be many better than Werner, especially at that price.

They’ll have the money, they’ll offer him a starring role, and they’ll be eager to make it happen quickly. Those are all uncertain with Liverpool.
It all relies on Barcelona spending the cash to sign Martinez, though. If they do, Inter might just usurp Liverpool in pole position.
