Inter will focus on Timo Werner as a replacement for Lautaro Martinez, according to reports. Liverpool, of course, supposedly want Werner, too.
This is according to Gazzetta Dello Sport. The Italian outlet believes that should Martinez head elsewhere, Werner is now at the top of the list – ahead of Edinson Cavani.
Reports linking Martinez with a move to Barcelona are almost constant. It’s virtually an open secret that the Catalonian’s want the Argentine, presumably as a replacement for Luis Suarez.
And if Inter lose a talent like Martinez, you can bet that they’ll want a big replacement. This is a team looking to compete with Juventus for the Serie A title, after all.
Mixed messages about Liverpool’s transfer business will give them hope, too. Some reports say the Reds won’t spend at all, others say they’re still favourites for the £50m man. The Reds can surely secure Werner if they want to but they may not take the risk right now.
But that risk is mitigated for Inter if they lose a key asset. They’ll be in a far better position to move for a player – and guarantee them an open spot in the team.
Selling Martinez guarantees them the funds for Werner, too, making Inter a difficult opponent in this apparent battle.
You would still expect Liverpool to win the race but only if they want to. If the Reds instead decide to play it safe and stick with what they’ve got, Inter may just have enough about them to get Werner over the line.
