Barcelona are looking for ways to sign Sandro Tonali, according to reports. Outlets have previously linked Liverpool with a move for the Italian.

That’s according to Sport. The Spanish paper believes that Barcelona want Tonali and value him at around £26m. That’s around half of what they claim Italian papers think.

The interesting thing is how they believe Barcelona will try to meet that £26m valuation. Because, apparently, it won’t be in straight cash.

Instead, the Catalonians will offer players to Brescia in order to tempt them. Failing that, they’ll look to strike up a partnership with the club like the apparently have with Sassuolo.

They’re far from the only club linked with Tonali, of course. Liverpool’s reported interest dates all the way back to January 2019, in fact.

Then, Brescia president Massimo Cellino told Corriere dello Sport that the Reds wanted Tonali. One year later, Goal were saying Liverpool still had interest.

Whether they’re willing to push as hard as Barcelona, however, we don’t know.

What RTK has to say

It sounds as though it may be difficult to compete with Barcelona over Tonali – unless a club pays the cash, of course. Although, a long-term partnership with the Catalonians may trump a monetary offer, depending on the details.

There is the question of why Barcelona would want yet another midfield playmaker, though. A midfield of Arthur, Frenkie de Jong and Tonali does seem like three players largely trying to do the same stuff but that’s just our opinion.

There is definitely space for one at Liverpool, though. And it seems that financially, you can beat Barcelona here. Thus if Liverpool do want Tonali, they can pay for him.

But Barca appear to have ways to bring that price down for them. Liverpool may struggle to match that kind of partnership deal, given they don’t quite have the pedigree of Barcelona in Europe yet.

Instead, if they want Tonali, they’ll have to offer guaranteed money and a first-team role, then hope that’s more appealing.
