Report: Jurgen Klopp first to spot Rodrygo Goes but couldn't get it done

Jurgen Klopp was the first major figure to spot Rodrygo Goes back in 2017. He couldn’t finalise a deal for the player, however.

OK Diario claims that Klopp saw big things in Rodrygo in 2017, quoting one of the player’s representatives, Nick Arcuri. Arcuri claims that Liverpool’s management contacted him over a move.

“They told me that Klopp knew the player, that he had seen his material and that he had already personally come to see him,” he said. “They wanted it to be his first signing that year.”

Liverpool apparently made a firm offer for Rodrygo, which Acruri took to Santos. The Brazilians wouldn’t budge on the 16-year-old, however – he wasn’t for sale.

Instead, they handed Rodrygo a new contract. The teenager signed it and one year later, Santos agreed a deal with Real Madrid to sell the 17-year-old for around £39m.

What RTK has to say

Assuming that Arcuri is accurate, what a shame this is. Rodrygo is an incredibly talented player – as well as a very exciting one. You’ve got to believe that Klopp would work wonders having a player like that.

You can’t blame Santos for refusing to sell, though. The following year proved them overwhelmingly right as they secured £39m for a barely-professional player.

Liverpool were never going to compete with that spending. As talented as Rodrygo clearly is, he’s still an unknown quantity and any money is a risk. Let alone £39m, the amount Liverpool paid for a player as proven as Fabinho.

So instead, this one remains a real ‘what if?’.
