Liverpool can forget Dayot Upamecano if Manchester clubs are involved

Liverpool can forget about signing Dayot Upamecano now that the Manchester clubs are reportedly in the mix. Reports linked the Reds last month.

Sky Sports claim that both Manchester United and Manchester City want Dayot Upamecano. The 21-year-old Frenchman is entering the final year of his contract with RB Leipzig and has a £52.5m release clause.

Combine those two and it looks incredibly likely that Upamecano will leave in the transfer window. The two rivals aren’t the first names to reportedly look at Upamecano, though.

PassioneInter linked Liverpool with a move last month, for instance. Then AS claimed recently that Real Madrid want Upamecano.

So in short, competition is fierce.

What RTK has to say

If Liverpool really did have any hopes of signing Upamecano, this surely ends them. They just can’t compete with their two rivals.

That’s not to say that the Reds can’t beat the two of them to signings. They certainly do have the money and the appeal but for Upamecano, that appeal isn’t quite there.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

As Sky say, there is a clear place at both City and United for the player. City apparently want two centre-halves, for one thing, while United are constantly trying to rebuild their defence.

So Upamecano can look at both teams and see a clear future where he can be the main man. He wouldn’t get that at Liverpool.

Not only is Virgil van Dijk there as a clear mainstay but Joe Gomez looks certain to have a place nailed down for years. If Upamecano joined this year, those two make it unclear how often he’d actually play.

The Manchester clubs can guarantee first-team football, though. Liverpool just can’t. And seeing as all three clubs can pay big money, first-team football will surely be a deciding factor.
