Liverpool fans have been treated to some sublime managers over the years, some are remembered more fondly than others. One of our favourites of recent times is Rafa Benitez, however, everything could have been so different. Jamie Carragher has admitted that the players were consulted about Jose Mourinho potentially becoming Liverpool manager.

Back in 2004 the higher ups at Anfield were plotting about who should be Gerard Houllier’s successor.

The Frenchman had left the club after six years at the helm on Merseyside.

Rafa Benitez was eventually appointed as the new Liverpool gaffer and he went on to enjoy great success during his time in charge.

We can never forget the Spaniard’s debut season when he guided The Reds to Champions League glory in extraordinary circumstances.

It could have all taken a different turn, Jamie Carragher has revealed that Jose Mourinho was discussed with the players as a candidate for the next Liverpool next manager. The defender told Sky Sports:

“Gerard Houllier had lost his job and Rick Parry had interviewed Rafa Benitez at some stage. He was just keeping the senior players informed of where they were up to.

“He did mention Jose Mourinho. I knew much more about Rafa Benitez because of the Spanish league and it looked like that was down the road anyway.

“But I think the feeling was that Jose Mourinho couldn’t be a Liverpool manager. Possibly, in some ways, because of the way he conducted himself at times.”

What RTK has to say

Imagine how different our history would be. Jose is one of the biggest personalities of modern football.

We wouldn’t change what happened for the world though, Kopites have a begrudging respect for Mourinho. He has been a worthy foe over the years and he definitely has an admiration for Liverpool.

It would also be a disservice to the great job that Rafa did to suggest we would have had it any other way. Benitez is a Liverpool legend, we were lucky to have him.
