Supposed Liverpool target Dayot Upamecano wants to leave RB Leipzig, according to reports. It could see his price drop.
Bild claims that the defender wants to leave RB Leipzig for ‘an even bigger club’. Given that Upamecano is just 21 and already looks like an accomplished defender, you’d imagine he can make that happen.
But Bild also senses that there’s potential for his ‘fixed price’ of around £54m to drop. That’s because of the current financial situation, as well as the upcoming end to his contract.
Other reports have linked Liverpool with a move, such as PassioneInter last week. This news could, therefore, be music to the Reds’ ears.
What RTK has to say
If this is all true, Liverpool should be interested. Upamecano is one of the brightest young defenders around – possibly the brightest – and so, really, everyone should take note.
He looks like the ideal long-term partner for Joe Gomez, for instance, but that carries one problem. Virgil van Dijk isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and paying lots of money to replace Gomez with another young defender seems like a waste. So Upamecano would have to wait.
Would he do that? It seems unlikely. He’s playing first-team football in the Champions League and Bundesliga, so becoming a squad player seems a little beneath him.
If Upamecano wants first-team football at a ‘bigger’ club, he can get it, in short. That doesn’t put Liverpool in an easy position to make this deal happen.
Still, that Gomez/Upamecano partnership just seems so tempting. At a reduced price, it might make some sort of deal possible – perhaps, like with Naby Keita, a potential loan back?
That could be a way to keep both Upamecano and RB Leipzig happy. Without that, though, this might be a tough one to make work, as talented as he is.
