Last summer we saw Liverpool refuse to splash out on any first team improvements. Instead Michael Edwards recruited two backup goalkeepers and two of Europe’s most sought after prospects. We can expect a further focus on youth this summer with a couple slightly older footballers to add depth and variety to the first team. Liverpool have been linked with a move for Malick Thiaw but they reportedly face competition from Manchester United and Arsenal.

The Reds are more than likely to bring in a centre back this summer.

Michael Edwards is widely expected to let Dejan Lovren leave the club, with the Liverpool ECHO reporting that the Croatian will cost potential suitors as little as £10m.

With our fourth choice centre half heading for the door we will need to replace him.

Sepp Van Den Berg is one option but whether he’ll be trusted remains to be seen.

Ben White of Brighton and Leeds United has been touted as a target.

The latest rumour, as reported by the Daily Mail is that Liverpool will turn to Malick Thiaw of Schalke in the German Bundesliga.

The 18-year-old defender has been dubbed ‘the next Joel Matip’ due to the fact that the pair made their first team debuts at centre back at 18 and are both comfortable on the ball.

The Mail has claimed that Arsenal and Manchester United are also in pursuit, reporting a release clause of £7m.

What RTK has to say

If Thiaw is indeed gathering the interest of the Premier League big boys then maybe we should sit up and take notice.

He has already made his first team debut and to do so at his age in the heart of a top flight defence is incredibly impressive.

If we had to pick between Thiaw and Ben White we would likely go with White but finances could get in the way of that.

The paltry release clause being touted for Thiaw could be a clincher for the frugal Michael Edwards.
