Liverpool should keep an eye on Declan Rice as the pursuit for the player begins.
Sky Sports claim that Chelsea want the 21-year-old and will make a move this summer – if the transfer window opens. The Blues actually released Rice as a youth player but want him back at the club.
And this is one that Liverpool should monitor. Rice could be a solid signing for them, after all, as he meets a good few requirements at Anfield.
First of all, he’s a young, talented player. Everyone should at least consider Rice, especially if West Ham United go down this season.
But he’d also be a bright young talent in the holding role and Liverpool lack that. They’ve got exciting prospects in virtually every role but don’t have a defensive midfielder for the future.
It’s one of the reasons we feel Eduardo Camavinga would be a good signing. But Liverpool reportedly face a lot of elite competition for the Frenchman – you can’t put all of your eggs in that basket. And that’s another reason to monitor Rice, as even if Camavinga was first-choice, they need a backup option.
But Rice is a good option in his own right. He’s English, which is something we know Jurgen Klopp values just from looking at his squad.
He’s built his midfield around Jordan Henderson and utilised James Milner to wonderful effect. He likes Adam Lallana, too, while both full-backs are British. Joe Gomez, too, looks set to remain for a long time. The British mentality is clearly a virtue in Klopp’s team.
You can add Rice’s versatility to all of that, too. He’s a capable centre-back and Liverpool will be looking for an option there, with Dejan Lovren possibly leaving.
Rice may not be first-choice but he’d be a very interesting player to have at Liverpool. At just 21 and with years of Premier League experience behind him, you’d have to imagine Klopp could work wonders.
He’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
