Liverpool may have a second chance to sign French defender Jean-Clair Todibo. The Reds reportedly wanted him last season.
Bild claim that Schalke are unsure whether to pay £23m option on Todibo’s loan. He’s currently at the club from Barcelona, who he only joined last year, and can move to Germany permanently for that price.
But while Todibo has shone, the current climate means Schalke are unsure whether they can afford him. Bild say the likelihood of it happening is only decreasing.
Reports elsewhere, however, make it clear that Barcelona want to raise funds as soon as possible. Sport, for instance, list several players they’re hoping to offload. If Todibo didn’t already have that clause in place, you can imagine he’d make the list, too.
So this is where Liverpool can come in. Reports from back in 2018, such as from La Depeche, say the Reds wanted Todibo before he left Toulouse for Barcelona.
They weren’t the only ones, of course, but their name was in the mix. Todibo went for Barcelona, however, and Liverpool moved on.
But this current situation appears to give them a second chance. They apparently want a young centre-back, anyway, with links to Diego Carlos (ABC), Dayot Upamecano (Passione Inter), and Jose Gimenez (Passione Inter) over recent weeks.
Todibo is still only 20 and does look like a talent – even if Barcelona are unsure. This could be a way of securing a player Liverpool allegedly rate at a decent price, too, with Barcelona surely happy to sell.
They may have thought their chance was gone but the door may have opened for Todibo to Liverpool once again.
