Reports link Liverpool with at least three centre-back targets but they need don’t need any thanks to Joe Gomez.
El Desmarque believes Carlos has a £64m release clause, for instance. The Mail say Upamecano’s is £50m. Then there’s whatever Gimenez would cost – it won’t be cheap to sign a player from Atletico Madrid.
Fortunately, Liverpool have a superior player in Gomez.
It’s easy to forget that the Englishman is still only 22. He’s been around for nearly five years, after all, since arriving for £3.5m in 2015.
Being 22 means he’s actually considerably younger than two of the three reported targets. He’s three years younger than Giminez, for instance, and five years younger than Carlos. Gomez’s potential, then, is far superior to the duo.
Only Upamecano, at 21, is younger.
But Gomez already has so much experience. He’s won the Champions League, of course, and will add the Premier League, too.
He’s a part of a brilliant partnership with Virgil van Dijk, one that kept a fantastic number of clean sheets over December. In fact, Gomez looks like the ideal Van Dijk replacement. He’s a great fit already, knows the style, knows his teammates and is a certain first-choice defender for years to come.
And that’s why Liverpool don’t need to spend big on defenders. Gomez trumps them all in potential and experience, meaning any new signing would be backup.
None of the aforementioned defenders would be backup. They’re expensive players who will want to be first-choice. But with Gomez in their way, these reported targets surely can’t get that at Anfield.
