Reports claim that Liverpool want Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare. In fact, they say negotiations have gone on for some time.
That’s according to Sport. Liverpool are Barcelona’s rivals for Soumare, apparently, as both look to secure a defensive midfielder.
Soumare, 21, has started fifteen games for Lille this season in what is his first real senior season. Whether he’ll get a second there is in doubt, of course, as teams circle.
Newcastle United reportedly tried to sign him in January, for instance. The Chronicle claims they had a £35m bid accepted, in fact, but Soumare said no.
And if reports are correct it looks like a good decision. He could be looking at a move to Europe’s elite, after all.
What RTK has to say
This isn’t the first report linking Liverpool with a defensive midfielder. In fact, it’s not even Sport’s first report linking Liverpool to a young, French, Ligue 1 defensive midfielder playing his first full senior season.
That’s because Sport also say the Reds want Eduardo Camavinga. If they’re right about both, the latter is the one fans should want.
Which would explain why their Soumare report has him down simply as an alternative to Camavinga.
The latter is four years younger, for starters, and leads Ligue 1 in tackling (per Whoscored). He’d be a wonderful signing for anyone, quite honestly, and looks like a sensational talent.
That’s not to say that Soumare wouldn’t be a good get for Liverpool. He’s a real prospect in his own right but really, fans should be hoping he’s simply an alternative.
